Captain’s Cup (Ecclesall Road)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2017

COMMENTS

We decided to visit this relative newcomer to the Ecclesall Road scene one fine September morning. It was fairly quiet when we arrived, but certainly started to fill up within half an hour. Inside was of course freshly decorated, some pleasant background music, and again of course a nautical theme to the décor, all-in-all very nice and tidy. Some locally produced CDs for sale and local publications were available to read if desired.

Printed menus were on each table, with some specials also available. Our order was taken soon after arrival, Eggs Benedict and Royale were the order of the day. Not fancying a coffee, on this occasion we plumped for peppermint tea and mango tea, both arriving in lovely see-through teapots, more than enough to last the meal.

Food arrived after a short wait (freshly made to order) and beautifully presented with the addition of pea-shoots for garnish and just enough hollandaise to enhance the dish. The muffins were beautifully lightly toasted (easy to cut into but with a light crunch). Very tasty indeed!

All the staff were pleasant and attentive.

Couch (City Centre – Campo Lane)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2017

COMMENTS

Called in for brunch, and found a table straight away, a good variety of seating available, including some settees!

We ordered from the menus on the table. Coffees arrived soon after ordering, and were refreshingly tasty, rather than the all-too-common insipid offerings. We ordered a full breakfast (for him) and poached eggs (for her). Food followed after a short while, nicely presented, freshly cooked and piping hot. Good quality menu, sufficient options for vegetarians.

OTHER NOTES    Spotlessly clean and tidy, comfortable seating, friendly staff, speedy service. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Pay on ordering. The venue can also be part / fully booked out for special occasions (there was a 30th birthday party on our visit).

DEPOT BAKERY (Kelham Island)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2017

COMMENTS

Having seen this on a “10 best brunch venues in Sheffield” list we headed down to give it a try. It’s located in the Peddlers Market area, and is housed in what appears to be an old industrial unit.

It was quiet when we arrived just after opening, but the people just kept pouring in, and soon there was not a table to be had. First thing we noticed was the rack of freshly baked breads available to be purchased for take away (we bought two for later on). The bakery itself was in the next room of the unit, and was a hive of activity as they were making up some of the menu items.

We found a table and ordered at the counter, there are menus on the tables and some on the board behind the counter.  We chose one Eggs Benedict (on sourdough toast with ham hock, leeks and spinach!) and one wild mushrooms on sourdough toast (with a creamy mustard sauce with shallot), both of which looked and tasted the part. Coffees were good and hot and lasted the duration.

Food was beautifully presented, tasted great with lovely fresh ingredients. Very friendly and efficient staff.

OTHER NOTES    We paid on ordering, fresh water on tap flavoured with cucumber and mint, a great touch.

THAT PLACE (Woodseats)

DATE OF VISIT    Winter 2016

COMMENTS

Staying local this morning, we strolled down to Woodseats to try That Place. We were not disappointed!

It was reasonably busy for early Saturday morning, the café was clean and tidy, and very nicely decorated. Unusually Radio 6 Music was playing in the background which was a nice surprise and kept us entertained.

We found a table and ordered at the counter. We chose one full breakfast (toast included) and one scrambled eggs on toast, which was declared to be heaven on a plate – such a large portion in fact that assistance was needed to finish it off!! Coffees were good and hot and lasted the duration.

Food was nicely presented, great tasting fresh ingredients and really filling, great VFM. Friendly staff on hand also.

We noted the specials board also if it was nearer lunch time etc., the café also opens later some evenings for bistro nights.

OTHER NOTES    We paid on exit.

CELLO (Greenhill)

DATE OF VISIT    Winter 2016

COMMENTS

Snow was falling on this February morning, so we headed over to Greenhill to Cello Café.

Cello was toasty warm, and nicely decorated on a musical theme as you would expect. We found a seat, and ordered at the counter from the table menus, there are some specials boards also at the counter.

We ordered the full breakfasts (toast included), one meat and one veggie. Coffees were piping hot and large enough to last to the end.

Food arrived after a medium wait, well presented, hot and obviously freshly cooked to order, we struggled to finish these!

OTHER NOTES    The café is clean and tidy with a warming welcome on a cold Winter day. Light background music, pay on exit if desired, or at the time of order.

LIME LOUNGE (Meadowhead)

DATE OF VISIT    Winter 2016

COMMENTS

On a crisp January morning, we wandered up the hill to Meadowhead and visited the Lime Lounge.

We found a seat at the window, and ordered at the counter from the menus displayed.

We ordered one full English breakfast (drink included!) and ‘absolutely gorgeous’ mushrooms in cheese and mustard sauce, which her indoors described as one of the tastiest breakfasts ever! Coffees were maybe on the weaker side, but that’s personal taste. At these prices this is a bargain for sure.

Food arrived after a short wait, well presented, hot and freshly cooked, and a real filler. We received friendly attentive service.

OTHER NOTES    The café is very clean and tidy with a modern look. Local magazines are around to read, pay on order.

S17 Coffee Shop and Bistro (Bradway)

DATE OF VISIT    Winter 2016

COMMENTS

Having spotted this café on a run past a week or two ago, we decided to pay a pre-Christmas visit for breakfast.

We found it to be pretty busy, squeaky clean and tidy, and tastefully decorated for Christmas. Quiet background music playing.

We found a table and were quickly greeted by the friendly staff, presented with menus, and given nice clear instructions on how and where to order. We chose one full breakfast (toast included) and one Eggs Royale. Tea and coffee arrived shortly and were good hot and strong.

Food arrived after a short wait, beautifully fresh ingredients, piping hot, well presented, and a real filler.

We noted all the bistro nights for the month were already fully booked!

OTHER NOTES    pay on exit.
