Breakfast, Brunch, Sheffield Cafe Reviews, Sheffield Cafes

Homemade by Thelma (Nether Edge)

We called in for Saturday breakfast and ordered at the counter (see below). Menus are on the tables. Coffees were served quickly, with a nice choice of hot or cold milk to accompany. Food arrived soon after meaning both could be enjoyed together. What came was beautifully presented and cooked, plenty of freshly cooked tasty ingredients, a nice touch was the maple syrup served in a side dish rather than pre-poured all over, leaving it to your taste how much you used.

Really friendly staff, and plenty of seating inside.

OTHER NOTES    Some initial confusion over whether to order at counter or table service, but sure order would have been taken at table, we did order at the counter however. Pay on leaving.

Bradleys @ The Nicholson Building (Shalesmoor)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2014

We came here for brunch, a good variety on the blackboard menus, including a good range of vegetarian options. Order was promptly taken at the counter. Food service arrived after only a few minutes, coffees had arrived in the meantime, and were plenty hot enough to last the meal.

Friendly quick service, and good fresh tasty ingredients.

OTHER NOTES    Order and pay at the counter. Various curios on display and also for purchase, in keeping with the nature of the building, nice quirky mix of furnishings, posters etc.

ON-A-ROLL (Broomhill)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2014

COMMENTS

Looking for Saturday brunch on a rainy morning, we found a seat in the window and ordered from the menus on the table. Coffees came not long after, definitely one of the weakest coffees we have tasted. Food followed not long after. Freshly cooked to order, and more than enough to satisfy the biggest of appetites!  Not top quality ingredients, has to be noted, BUT this is TOP value for money – less than £9 for two hearty breakfasts including drinks, that’s hard to beat.

Reasonably friendly staff, although did seem to be admonishing the chef at one point in full earshot of the customers.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, not the biggest indoor seating area but we found a table no problem.

Barratts (Crookes)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2013

COMMENTS

Situated in the former Crookes butchers shop, nice fresh interior. Order taken at the counter, menus are on the tables and blackboards, and whilst not the most extensive, nonetheless plenty of interest here. Service arrived after a short time, coffees (which were refreshingly full of flavour) were served immediately, and were hot enough to last the meal. Most of the menu can be tailored to your own choice of the fresh breads (supplied by St Luke’s Hospice on our visit) on display.

Friendly helpful staff, and pretty quick service.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, seating is somewhat limited, but readily available on our visit. Fresh bread is also available to buy and take away.

Cafe Pie (South Road – Walkley)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2014

COMMENTS

This cafe is a celebration of all things Sheffield, from the décor to the background music, great interior with traditional café seats. After a friendly greeting, our order was taken at the counter, menus are on the black boards, and whilst not the most extensive, nonetheless plenty to be tempted by.

Only quibble was the lack of many “set” vegetarian options. However, service was rapid on both coffees (which had a great flavour) and food, both of which were piping hot.

OTHER NOTES    Local magazines to read, pay on ordering.

Tamper (City Centre – off West Street)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2013

COMMENTS

Called in for Saturday breakfast. Order at the counter, menus are on the tables and also on the blackboards. Coffees were served quickly, food arrived soon after. Food was served after a short wait, good wholesome ingredients. CARE – for some reason thought menu was entirely vegetarian and ordered accordingly, noticed later bacon etc was available if desired! Check out the proper homemade baked beans, not your average Heinz (for example) serving.

Friendly staff, sufficient seating inside, loads of local magazines etc to read.

OTHER NOTES    Lively place with a good turnover of customers, pay on leaving.
