Emma’s Cafe (London Road)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2014

COMMENTS

Called in for Saturday breakfast. We ordered at the counter, menus are on the tables, and a vegetarian breakfast available. A nice touch was actually asking at what point we would like our drinks, a simple but pleasing gesture, and we elected to have these come at the same time as the food.

Food arrived after a brief wait, and was piping hot, maybe not the top quality ingredients but at this price who could quibble. The “belly-buster” would almost certainly have been of epic proportions, as we had plenty in the full (meat and meat-free) breakfasts we ordered.

OTHER NOTES    Fairly quiet for a Saturday morning, nice mix of seating styles available, pay on ordering.

Café Moco (City centre – West Street)

DATE OF VISIT    Early Spring 2013

COMMENTS

We called in here for breakfast on a cold snowy Saturday morning. We found an excellent menu on offer, including plenty for the vegetarian. Our order was taken promptly at the counter, pay on ordering.

Efficient service, our coffees were made while we waited and arrived quickly, whilst food was cooked freshly in the adjoining kitchen room.

Sufficient seating available, and a nice relaxing atmosphere. Also does a take-away service so plenty of customer turn-over.

OTHER NOTES    Very friendly staff, difficult to fault this cafe.

Endcliffe Park Cafe (Ecclesall Road)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2013

COMMENTS

What you see is what you get, this place is always busy, always seems to be improving, and extremely popular. We called in for breakfast, and found an excellent, reasonably priced and comprehensive menu. Vegetarian and meat based sandwiches were ordered. Coffees are pretty much made up instantly, for collection at the counter, where all the milk and sugar etc is readily available. Food orders are quickly served up also.

An abundance of staff means you never have to wait long for ordering or service.

OTHER NOTES    Seating inside and out. Magazines etc available to browse.

Wellies (City Centre – Charles Street)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2014

COMMENTS

Looking for Saturday breakfast, we found Wellies empty, but it had not been open for long. No problem finding a table therefore, a reasonable amount of seating available, although of course this is also a take-away. We ordered from the menus on the table, plenty of choice, and the staff were happy to adapt the menu to our requests. Full breakfast (for him), and a toastie (for her), both of which turned out to be huge!

Coffees arrived soon after ordering, nice and hot. Food followed soon after, freshly cooked and good quality ingredients. Difficult to quibble with this, a real filler at a very reasonable price. Only improvement here would be toast not ready buttered and maybe cut to triangles rather than one big slice, however this really is a very minor point.

OTHER NOTES    Very clean and tidy, comfortable seating, friendly staff, efficient service. A steady stream of customers called in during our stay.

Eten (City Centre)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2014

COMMENTS

We had heard some good reviews about Eten, so came in for breakfast. A nice touch straight away – please wait to be seated – as the waitress explained that way no-one gets forgotten! We were offered a choice of tables – there is plenty of seating upstairs and down (function rooms are also available), including big settees.

We ordered from the menus on the table. Coffees arrived shortly after ordering, a good hot strong mug with milk to accompany. We chose full English (him) including coffee and toast, and Eggs Royale (her), other tempting egg based options were available, as were veggie breakfasts and smaller portions. Food was freshly cooked and piping hot, with excellent quality ingredients.

Be under no illusions, these are big portions!

OTHER NOTES    Pay on leaving, very nicely furnished and decorated, with local gig posters all over the walls, very friendly staff, and pleasant efficient service.

Rude Shipyard (Abbeydale Road)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2014

COMMENTS

Called in for lunch, we ordered off the simple menu on the blackboards – printed menus are also available, our order was promptly taken, we were advised there could be a small delay (it was Saturday lunchtime). The delay was only a few minutes, and our coffees arrived in the meantime. We picked sandwiches rather than breakfast – offered with a choice of breads, with a nice dressed salad – mainly vegetarian but at least one meat option was available, option to order extra side dishes.

Nice friendly laid-back service, great fresh ingredients.

OTHER NOTES    order at counter, pay on ordering or at the end as you like. Free glasses of water available on request. This is also a book shop!

Called in for Saturday morning breakfast, and found a seat in the window. We ordered from the menus on the table. Coffees came not long after, and food came not long after that. Really fresh and tasty ingredients, piping hot, and enough to satisfy.

Notably friendly service, really attentive.

OTHER NOTES    Toilet was the only down side. Pay on exit.
