New York Deli (Commonside)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2013

COMMENTS

We found this little gem on our doorstep one Saturday morning. This little café boasts a good American themed menu as you would expect.

Our order was taken at the counter. Service was efficient and very friendly, and our food order arrived after a short while. Coffees were served immediately, and were hot enough to last the meal.

Efficient service, a well-run cafe, and a fantastic, very tasty plateful of food – we both opted for American pancakes.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, limited seating including outdoors. Great USA décor, and a steady turnover of take-away customers.

Spoons (Woodseats)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2013

COMMENTS

On our way to Manchester, we called in here for brunch to set us up for the day.

We were greeted cheerily, and our order taken straight away.

Although our order was taken very promptly, and coffees arrived in very quick time, staff seemed to be in short supply. A very long wait ensued, meaning coffees were drunk well before breakfast arrived.

However, the food that arrived was freshly cooked, and what a huge plateful! Piping hot too; and our window seat was similarly toasting!

OTHER NOTES    Order taken by waiter, pay at end. Plenty of comfortable seating and spotlessly clean.

The Grind (Kelham Island)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2013

COMMENTS

We’d heard good things about The Grind, so paid a visit with friends for breakfast. A wide menu is available via the printed menus; some specials are available in addition.

Our order was taken at the counter (we tried American style waffles with bacon and maple syrup, and scrambled eggs). Service arrived after a short while; coffees arrived in the meantime, and were hot enough to last the meal.

Friendly efficient service, and a great big plateful when it comes, good fresh tasty ingredients, faultless food in fact.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, with a mix of high and low level seating, and some external seats also available, weather permitting. There is a deli counter also for take-away, with some really tasty looking produce available.

Butter Me Up (Queens Road – opposite B & Q)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2014

COMMENTS

We spotted this place and called in for breakfast.

It’s probably more of a sandwich take-away shop, so indoor seating is very limited; although it would have been warm enough to sit out on this particular day and there is room for a dozen or so diners outside. We ordered from the blackboard menus, simple traditional breakfasts, with a vegetarian option.

We got an indoor table in the end, and probably waited about 15 minutes for coffee and food, which arrived together.

Let’s get one thing straight, these probably aren’t breakfast ingredients of the highest quality, but were good honest “fry up” ingredients. At under £7 for two full breakfasts (one meat and one veg), including coffee and toast, no-one could argue about the value for money!

Staff worked hard to clear a backlog of orders, and were cheerfully going about their work.

Not sure who could have managed the belly buster extra large breakfast, as the portions were extremely generous anyway.

OTHER NOTES    Order and pay at counter. TV on in background, coffees were quite weak, but that’s a minor and personal quibble.

The Emporium (Heeley Bottom)

DATE OF VISIT    early 2014

COMMENTS

Hungry on a crisp Saturday morning, we found ourselves in the antiques quarter, and found a table straight away, in this treasure trove of a venue.

The menu is short and simple, written up on blackboards. We received a very friendly greeting, and our order was taken promptly, we were also offered a free sample of the soups so we could decide which to have!

Coffees were made straight away (with a complimentary chocolate), and free refills also!

Freshly cooked food arrived after a short wait, and was of excellent quality, and plentiful, with imaginative side salads and lots of fresh bread for the soup, nicely presented.

OTHER NOTES    Spotlessly clean. Order at counter, pay on leaving. Newspapers etc available to browse, some of the fixtures and fittings available to purchase!

Gerties (Walkley)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2014

COMMENTS

Saturday morning, looking for breakfast, we found ourselves on South Road. At Gerties, we found a good variety on the printed and blackboard menus, including plenty for the vegetarian, and not just the usual “fry up” fare. A wide range of teas also.

Our order was promptly taken at the counter. Service arrived after only a few minutes, our coffees had arrived in the meantime, and these were plenty hot (and strong) enough to last the meal.

Friendly, efficient quick service, and good locally sourced tasty ingredients, freshly cooked to order. Big plates of food here, smaller portions are available – a nice idea.

OTHER NOTES    Order at the counter, either pay on order or as you leave. A busy and lively café, some comfy window seats available.

Somewhere Else (Banner Cross)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2014

COMMENTS

Looking for some much needed breakfast to cheer us up after the loss of our greyhound Maddy, we made our second attempt at eating at Xenophily on Ecclesall Road, again not open at the advertised time! Instead we headed up the road to this family-run newcomer.

Very thoughtfully decorated, we found a table, plenty of seating available as unfortunately we were the only customers (mid Saturday morning on the Bank Holiday) – hope it picks up for them. We ordered from the blackboard – not the standard fry-up menu here so we opted for very tasty toast with vegetarian toppings (sun dried tomatoes & cheese for him, avocadoes and fresh tomatoes for her!).

Coffees arrived shortly after ordering, strong and hot, with a small bottle of milk to accompany. Food followed soon after, freshly cooked, piping hot, and superbly tasty – if not the biggest portions.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on leaving, clean and tidy, friendly staff.
