Woody’s Sandwich Bar (Ecclesall Road / Hunters Bar)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2014

COMMENTS

Called in for Saturday brunch (intending to go to Xenophilly next door, but wasn’t open at the advertised time). We received a friendly welcome, in what is in effect a take-away but with a handful of tall seats in the window. We ordered from the blackboard menus at the counter, and found a seat (outside seating was also available but the rain was torrential !).

Both food and coffees arrived in a very short time, sandwiches wrapped for take-away but we ate ours indoors. Coffees were piping hot, and lasted well after the food. Food was freshly cooked and served as breakfast buns, packed full of good fresh ingredients, a really hefty sandwich.

Friendly, efficient service.

OTHER NOTES    pay on ordering, a few local magazines around to read.

COMMENTS

Called in for Saturday brunch, found a seat and ordered from the menus on the table. Coffees came not long after, possibly one of the weaker coffees we have tasted. Food followed not long after. Freshly cooked to order, and enough to satisfy. Not top quality ingredients, but with this in mind is not bad value for money.

Friendly staff, small quibble over our change, but this was easily sorted.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, not the biggest indoor seating area but we found a table no problem.

The Street Food Chef Mexican Canteen (City Centre – ARUNDEL Street)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2014

COMMENTS

Called in for Saturday brunch, found a seat after a short wait – this place is busy and has a steady turnover of customers. It also operates as a take away. We ordered burritos from the menus on the boards above the counter – bean chilli, peppers and onion (for her) and pulled pork (for him). Very much like an American fast food restaurant (plenty of staff turning out quick, good quality food). We chose cold drinks from the fridge, beer is available also. Food came quickly, this is a fast food outlet, and served wrapped in tin foil in a plastic basket. Freshly cooked, tasty Mexican style food, piping hot, and we’re glad we didn’t choose the larger portions!

Quick, friendly efficient service.

OTHER NOTES    Not a traditional breakfast menu, but great for brunch. Pay on ordering.

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2014

COMMENTS

On a wet blustery Saturday we again stayed local for breakfast, and tried this busy family-run café.

We found a seat near the window (there’s a reasonable amount of inside seating, and for the brave a couple of outside seats). The café also operates as a take away and has a steady stream of customers.

We ordered from the large blackboard menus above the counter. There’s a great range of both meat and veggie options, sandwiches etc made to your order on a choice of bread, or for the hungrier customer a full/half set breakfast option for both the carnivore and veggie customer. Coffees (a choice of instant or filter available) were served straight away, plenty hot enough to last the visit.

Freshly cooked tasty food came after a short wait, piping hot, and enough to satisfy. The Full English is indeed a filler, with toast and hot drink included in the price. The veggie sausage sandwich (on white French bread) is large enough to satisfy a healthy appetite.

Nice friendly service – and the offer of a free coffee top-up was a lovely touch.

OTHER NOTES: Local magazines and the odd national newspaper available to read. Pay on ordering (helpful signs advise you of this). Hard to fault this one for value. There were clearly a number of regulars which is a reflection of the friendliness of the staff.

Hercule (Crookes)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2014

COMMENTS

Decided to stay local for this Saturday’s breakfast, and sat at one of the tables (window and counter seats also available, as are a couple of outside seats). Hercule also operates as a take away.

We ordered from the menu on the blackboards above the counter. Coffees were served fairly quickly, and were hot enough to last the visit. As hot food is cooked to order, there was a short wait for this (we chose paninis, a range of ingredients can be ordered as you wish, the same goes for standard breakfasts – there are also “set” meat and veggie full breakfast options).

Food was certainly piping hot and very tasty, and enough to satisfy.

OTHER NOTES    Plenty on the menu, and certainly one of the best selections for vegetarians we have come across. Pay on exit, there is a surcharge for eating in.
