Cafe Pie – 2nd visit (Walkley)

DATE OF VISIT    Winter 2015

On a damp Saturday morning, we had a short period of time only to get some breakfast, and remembered this smart cafe from a year or so ago.

We ordered from the blackboards behind the counter, choosing regular egg and mushroom butty (for her) and large sausage and bacon butty (for him), along with a coffee each. Today it wasn’t overly busy, so we had our pick of the seats.

Service was again rapid on both coffees and food, both of which arrived together, and large certainly means large! The food was clearly freshly cooked and tasty – and the coffee was smooth and piping hot. Service was friendly and efficient.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, selection of local magazines to read.

Hidden Gem (Ringinglow)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2015

On a misty Autumn Saturday we decided to head for Hidden Gem, which had received some good reviews recently in the local press, not least for its’ support for people with learning difficulties.

Inside was toasty warm (unlike outside!), and we were lucky to find a free table as the place was busy. The café was also nicely decorated and some of the items were available to purchase.

We were offered printed menus, and our order was taken soon after (Full English for him, and an enticing Beetroot Gravlax for her, with coffee.

Coffees arrived promptly with choice of hot or cold milk, and were nice and hot and full flavoured. As mentioned the place was busy, and food arrived after probably 15 minutes or so, meaning coffees were about finished by this time. However it was a worthwhile wait, as the food was beautifully cooked and presented, obviously fresh to order. Nothing out of a packet here, everything was home-made, including some cracking baked beans, and prices reflect this fact.

We paid on leaving, and found all the staff to be pleasant and welcoming.

OTHER NOTES    plenty of seating, including some outside, on reclaimed timber tables.

Mustard and Pickle (Woodseats)

DATE OF VISIT    Early 2015

Looking a bit further afield today for Saturday brunch, we braved the Woodseats traffic and found this small café / takeaway. Two / three indoor tables are available, we sat at one of the empty ones.

We received a friendly cheerful greeting from the man behind the counter (and the other customer) who as it turned out was on his own, so was doing a great job taking orders, cooking them and serving as well ! As a result a modest wait ensued, but nothing to spoil the visit, and he certainly didn’t seem fazed by it.

We ordered from the menu above the counter (large full English for him, veggie sausage and mushrooms for her), with two filter coffees.

Coffees arrived shortly, could have been a touch warmer but nice and strong, and just about still going to the end.

Food came after a short wait, hot and freshly cooked, the big breakfast is certainly that, whilst the veggie sandwich couldn’t be faulted, served in a lovely soft brown roll.

Friendly, attentive service.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, national newspapers and local magazines available to read.

Amici & Bici (Abbeydale Road)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2014

Appropriately, we visited on Tour De France weekend, and received a friendly welcome. We ordered from the blackboard menus at the counter, and found a seat under one of the signed cycling team shirts.

There was a delay on coffees arriving, but the waitress came round to apologise and explain the reason – refreshing! The delay was brief anyway, we watched the Tour De France build up on the large TV. Coffees arrived just before the food, again refreshingly strong and flavoursome. Food was freshly cooked and piping hot, good fresh ingredients, and plenty of it. Plenty of coffee left at the end to finish off.

Great friendly, efficient and attentive service.

OTHER NOTES    pay on ordering.
