Book and Bean (Woodseats)

DATE OF VISIT    Early 2016

COMMENTS

Called in here today for Saturday brunch, a clean and tidy café with several indoor tables, there was no-one in when we arrived but it quickly filled up with customers.

We ordered from the menus on the table, full meat and veggie breakfasts (toast included) with large coffees. The coffees soon arrived and were more than hot enough to last beyond the meal.

Food came after a short wait, piping hot and obviously cooked to order. Both breakfasts were good big plates, at a very reasonable price, the fried bread was refreshingly not deep-fried.

Friendly, attentive service.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, national newspapers available to browse.

Cafe Pie – 2nd visit (Walkley)

DATE OF VISIT    Winter 2015

COMMENTS

On a damp Saturday morning, we had a short period of time only to get some breakfast, and remembered this smart cafe from a year or so ago.

We ordered from the blackboards behind the counter, choosing regular egg and mushroom butty (for her) and large sausage and bacon butty (for him), along with a coffee each. Today it wasn’t overly busy, so we had our pick of the seats.

Service was again rapid on both coffees and food, both of which arrived together, and large certainly means large! The food was clearly freshly cooked and tasty – and the coffee was smooth and piping hot. Service was friendly and efficient.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, selection of local magazines to read.

Four Corners Canteen (Abbeydale Road)

DATE OF VISIT    Winter 2015

COMMENTS

We saw this place reviewed recently in the Sheffield Telegraph, and decided to pay a visit. We found the café fairly empty, but the weather was pretty poor and in fairness everywhere else looked deserted as well, although more people came in later.

We got a seat by the window. Inside was nicely decorated, fresh smelling, clean and tidy, with soft background music.

The menu was on a large blackboard behind the counter, and we were warmly greeted as we entered, and our minds had been read as breakfast was suggested! Nice and simple, “Big Sur” full breakfast for him, same for her but veggie (no bacon and a £1 reduction in price). Tea/coffee included.

Coffee arrived shortly (strong and tasty) but not before a large complimentary carafe of iced water was presented, a nice touch.

These breakfasts could easily have been sold as “belly buster”, a fantastic plate of fresh food, great bacon and unusual touches such as diced avocado, orange slices, and some great fiery fried onions. Not only that though, out also came two huge fresh pancakes with maple syrup, included within the price! A feast no less. Coffees lasted the duration.

Nice relaxed atmosphere, plenty of seating, with 2 owners clearly enjoying themselves, and engaging with the customers.

We paid at the end. This is super food at a very reasonable price.

Forge Bakehouse (Abbeydale Road)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2015

COMMENTS

Finding ourselves across town, we called in to this corner position bakery / café.

It is a slightly odd arrangement in that there is no access between café and bakery, therefore you need to exit the café side and order in the bakery side, which is also the shop for take-away bread, cakes etc., all of which looked great!

Menus are on the tables – there is limited seating inside, for better weather there is plenty of covered outdoor seating as well. We ordered coffees, and Huevos Rancheros for him (baked eggs with chorizo and extra cheese on top) and baked eggs with slow cooked baked beans for her, also with extra cheese on top.

Coffees arrived after a short wait, piping hot, and with milk on the side. Food arrived very quickly after, and was very nicely presented on a metal tray, in a wide rimmed bowl. What a filler! Both dishes were full to the brim, and again piping hot, accompanied by the bakery’s own home-made bread. A proper brunch. Coffees were more than hot enough to last the whole meal.

OTHER NOTES    Pay on ordering, the staff were polite and efficient.

Urban Deli (City Centre – Campo Lane)

DATE OF VISIT    Summer 2013

COMMENTS

We called in for Saturday breakfast, and found a seat straight away, not overly busy. This is a cavernous place, furnished in a modern almost industrial fashion.

Urban Deli also operates as a deli take away.

We ordered from the menus on the tables. Coffees came after a short while, and food followed not long after. A nice simple range of tasty fresh food, with good coffee to accompany.

Pleasant friendly service.

OTHER NOTES    A welcome cool venue on a hot Summer day, newspapers available to browse. Pay on leaving.

Des Amis (Heeley Retail Park)

DATE OF VISIT    Spring 2014

COMMENTS

Called in for brunch, found a table straight away, and ordered from the menus on the table.  Not overly busy, there are plenty of tables, and usefully an outside menu at the entrance.

The owner was on this visit a bit “lively” and strangely did question my order! Not your bog-standard fry-up menu, this has a Turkish flavour in line with the restaurant’s ethnicity, so sausages for example are not standard “English” type, and all the more tasty as a result!  Coffees were served straight away on order, freshly cooked food arrived after a short wait, and was of excellent quality, and plentiful. Sufficient vegetarian options available.

OTHER NOTES    Background music, order and pay at counter.

Rendezvous (Totley Baslow Road)

DATE OF VISIT    Autumn 2015

COMMENTS

We’d been here many years ago and were keen on this October Saturday to have another look. We found the café fairly busy, but got a seat by the window. Inside was nice and warm, which with the cooler day outside led to a set of misted up windows.

Printed menus were on each table, and nice and clear instruction to order at the counter (a table visit was also available for the less mobile customer, a nice touch). Place and pay for orders at the counter therefore. We chose the full meat and vegetarian breakfasts, these generously come with tea / coffee and toast, at a very reasonable price.

Everything arrived at the same time, which makes a refreshing change. The food was freshly cooked, tasty and plentiful, including some really tasty sweet-cured bacon, and a large cheese omelette in the veggie option. The food was also really well presented on the plate, with toast served in a separate basket with small butter dishes on the side.

All the staff were pleasant and efficient.

OTHER NOTES    plenty of seating, some national newspapers available to browse, and also a selection of local produce for sale.
